Upload 1099 data file to IRS using the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS)
New for Tax Year 2023: All filers who will be filing a combined total of 10 or more W-2s and 1099s are required to electronically file all information returns.
A Transmitter Control Code (TCC) is Required
Prior to uploading information returns to IRIS you will need to apply for and receive a Transmitter Control Code (TCC) from the IRS
An ID.me account is Required
Prior to uploading information returns to IRIS you will need an ID.me account to log into IRIS.
Applying for a Transmitter Control Code (TCC)
If you will be filing using IRIS be sure you apply for the IRIS TCC. A FIRE TCC cannot be used in IRIS.
Click the link to "sign in to the IRIS Taxpayer Portal."
Sign in using your ID.me account
You will return to the IRS website to Select Your Organization
Scroll down to select your organization with an application type of IRIS TCC
Upload the data file
When uploading files to IRIS you will need to create and upload separate files for each form type
On the Dashboard click on Upload CSV with Form Data
Under Upload File click on browse and locate the file created with the W2/1099 Filer
1. Select file location - By default the files created will be in C:\TAS\23W21099\Efile\CompanyName
2. Select the file
3. Click the [Open] button to close the window
If any errors are displayed the errors must be corrected and the data file must be created again with the corrected information before the file can be uploaded.
If the file has no errors click the [Start] button to upload the file
Review the recipient information and click the [Add All] button to save the forms
Click [Continue] and you will get an Upload Successful screen
Click [Dashboard] to return to the IRIS Dashboard
The forms must be submitted to be considered file with the IRS - See Submit Forms below
Submit Forms
On the Dashboard click on View Unsubmitted Forms
Review the forms and click [Submit] at the bottom of the page
To View Previously Submitted Forms
Click on View Submitted Forms on the dashboard to review forms that have been submitted successfully
To Make Corrections to Previously Submitted Forms
1099 Forms submitted through the IRIS Taxpayer Portal must also be corrected or amended through the IRIS Taxpayer Portal
Scroll down to Sign In and click the link to "sign in to the IRIS Taxpayer Portal."
Select the [View Submitted Forms] button on the Dashboard to view all submitted forms
Mark the check box next to the transmission you’d like to correct amd click the [Correct/Replace] button.
Follow the steps provided on the Make a Correction page to make your corrections.
You can choose to submit a single form on the Review and Confirm page or complete multiple corrections and submit multiple corrected forms from the View Unsubmitted Forms page.
